spending time
with a loved one on his birthday–
Berlin Trilogy
NOTES
David Bowie is one of my two all-time favorite musical artists. (I can’t choose a favorite between him and Frank Zappa.)
Today, January 8, is Bowie’s birthday.
I am celebrating by listening on headphones to his Berlin Trilogy (link to Wikipedia).
These are three albums — Low, “Heroes”, and Lodger — Bowie made while he was in Europe trying to kick his cocaine addiction. He notably worked on these albums with Brian Eno (Roxy Music) and producer Tony Visconti.
Although I loved Bowie when I was a kid, these three albums sent me away from him for a few years. I didn’t understand them. They weren’t Ziggy or the Thin White Duke. They was too much ambient music, too abstract for my young taste. I mean, I liked weird, but not that kind of weird.
Suffice to say that when I finally revisited the Berin Trilogy as an older adult, I was better able to hear and feel the raw power and emotion in those albums. I invite you to do the same.
