outside a still lifein gray and white--barn star on the shed
overplayed songs:Free Bird, Stairway, Turn the Page --years later I still can't...
black streakscrossing the white yard--pigeon shadows
the frozen wind screamsto beat the ringing in my ears--not a moment's peace
regardless of qualityi will not follow the poetwho follows no one
all day to fix itbut tomorrow i'll still havea hole in my sock
through the windowi see that once againwinter has parked on my driveway
on the snowy shouldera crow pecks hungrily ata roadkill deer
i smell the snowblowing in on the windthat tousles my hair
the source of all lifeundeterred by its icy crustthe river flows
for supper today:salad, soup, sauté--carrot three ways
frozen compost bin--making compost lunch bagsto bury in spring
dawn breaks--i retire to my coffinuntil dusk wakes me
our washing machinelikes to take a little walkdown the crooked floor
cold clear morning:the sun gleams on the icethat is the driveway
through the humidifieron the cat seat by the window--refracted rainbow
a walk to the storeto buy some brownies--dodging snowflakes
my whole lifea pilgrimageto right here right now
and then a crackas i walk across the pond--i hold my breath
uneven rumbling--the heart of the houseis off-kilter
