wondering out loud
where will we finally settle?
the walls say nothing
NOTES
Fálki and I have been on the road since May 2022, so about a year now. We left Texas with the goal of seeing much of the USA and finding a cool place to settle. We didn’t put a time limit on our search, but living without a permanent home has proven to be, at the very least, bothersome.
Our original thought was to buy some land and put a yurt or a log cabin on it. Having now lived in a rural area in northern Maine for a few months, I understand better now the issues of such a lifestyle, primarily no access to fast or close medical services for we humans or our cats. There are not enough veterinarians! The idea that the local vets would not be taking new clients never occurred to me.
I suppose the lack of nearby veterinary services would not be a huge deal if we did not have one cat who can best be described as sickly. She seems healthy enough, but she has skin issues that have never been resolved and it’s an ongoing problem, so I’d love it if we had a nearby vet to take care of her.
Typing this just now, though, caused me to wonder how necessary a nearby vet is. We were only stranded for a few days this past winter, so driving was not terrible. We could theoretically get a vet in Bangor, which is 90 minutes away, and would suffice for shots and checkups. Emergencies are a potential issue, but they always are, aren’t they? Should I build my life around the odd emergency here and there?
At any rate, not having a permanent place to live is weighing on me a little bit. Technically I live with my parents in New Hampshire, but at some point we’ll need a place of our own.
